A Beautiful, if crowded, day at Ala Spit

    in Fishing Reports

Today Phil Latendresse and a novice fly fisher Phil knows, named Thomas, met me at Ala Spit for a little SRC fishing. I arrived a little early and found a beautiful morning and calm water (too early for the boaters, though they showed up in force later). Lots of others were on the beach clamming. Those who got there before me missed the later posting of the beach as closed for shellfish harvest due to red tide. I hope everyone survives.

There were cutthroat on the beach today. The largest I caught was perhaps 14". The joy of the day, however, was watching Thomas, whose only been in the area for a year and has had only six fly fishing outings, making great casts (he already knows the double-haul!) and have a good time. No cutthroat for him or Phil, Thomas seemed pleased with the several sculpin he hooked. He's a wonderfully energetic young man. Keep your eyes out for him on the beaches. He'll be out-fishing all of us soon.
