I became facinated with fly fishing at age 7 when my father tied a black gnat fly on the leader of an old cane trolliing rod and told me to flip it into the Salmon R. in Oregon many, many years ago. Since then I've made many discoveries, including the fortunate fact that I cast just as badly with a $1,000 rod as with a $100 rod, and that it is much more fun to hook a fish on fly you've tied yourself. My best fishing experiences have been on the N. Umpqua for summer steelhead, on the Miami R. in Oregon for winter steelhead, hand-lining baracuda and wahoo in Palau, Puget Sound beaches for sea run cutthroat and on the Kangia R., Greenland, for Arctic char.
