I fished Ala Spit yesterday during an outgoing tide in the early afternoon. I caught a gorgeous Dolly Varden! This was special for me for several reasons. It may have been my first fish caught there. More special is that it took one of my deer hair poppers that I have focused on for the last couple of years. I have given a lot of these away but have not heard that anyone caught anything on one of them yet. I certainly hoped they would work, but really had no proof until yesterday. It's one thing to tie your own style of flies, but another thing that they actually fool a fish. Here is the fly that worked: I didn't get a picture of the fish because he inhaled it. After removing the fly, I was just tickled that he swam away. I didn't want to torture him anymore but he was in the 20 inch range. I styled these flies knowing that Sea Run Cutthroat will take a popper and Chum Babies. Compare the tail to a Chum Baby and you will notice the resemblance. Here is one that isn't all beat up: I also style these after the famous Gurgler with whatever color turns you on. Here is one I tied in March around Saint Patrick's day. Notice the Irish colors: Still need to do a lot of product testing. One of these days, I am going to catch a Sea Run Cutthroat on them. For now I am tickled with the Dolly.

Been at Hoypus Point the last 3 days and may have seen 1 fish jump. Otherwise, no action. Planning to check out Ala tomorrow and maybe Friday afternoon for a few hours.

Several of us are planning to chase the hopefully not so elusive Sea Run Cutthroats. Camping at Belfair State Park and will fish multiple beaches in the area. They are supposed to be there then and the tides look good. Anybody is welcome to join us.

Ran across this article about a company that recycles old fly lines. Great use as opposed to sending them to a landfill or just cluttering up your storage space.

Still searching for Coho's. I am planning to fish Deception Pass at West Beach using the theory that the fish might be cruising by the beginning of the flood current. I have identified those times to be: Mon 9/28 8:00, Tues 9/29 9:00, Wed 9/30 10:00 I know this theory works on the other side at Hoypus Point, but it is closed this year.
Given my last trip down to the beach just south of the Coupeville Ferry they were there 2 hours prior to the morning high tide. I understand that that timing can work for the outgoing tide as well so I plan to experiment with these times there: Mon 9/28 Low 7:00 High 2:00, Tues 9/29 Low 7:30 High 2:30, Wed 9/30 Low 8:00 High 3:00.
Looking for input from anyone with local knowledge to help me figure out the Coho puzzle and anybody who wants to join me, let me know when you will be there. I may not hit all of the times I listed but unless WDFW extends the season, we are down to the last 3 days in 2020 for fishing for Salmon on the beaches of West Whidbey.

I just (5-5-20 at 7:45 am) made a drive by to Pass, Erie, Campbell and Heart lakes. All were pretty busy and parking lots are packed. There was one spot left at Pass and if I was going to go fishing, that is where I would have launched. The parking lot didn't have anyone hanging out. The others all looked like party hardy. Heart did have a city official looking like he was trying to maintain some order. So, my suggestion is that it all depends on your risk tolerance. In every case, I would be prepared to go to another spot or just back home. I am hoping that this will slow down in the next couple of days and weeks and I will see you out on the water, but not in the parking lot.

I was out on Pass Lake this week and had quite a bit of action, even got a couple to the net. The lake still has the Toxic Algae sign up and there is stuff floating on the surface but the fish didn't seem to care. There were a half a dozen boats on the lake. The Fidalgo Fly Fishers are having an outing this Tuesday in the afternoon/evening. The word is that when the lights go out, the fish go crazy. Dinner afterwards at the Rockfish Grill at 7:00. Let me know if you would like to join us.
